Julie Catherine is a mezzo-soprano with an atypical style. She sings an eclectic repertoire ranging from early music and art songs to contemporary works. Whether singing or playing the piano, her inquisitive nature allows her to express her art without codes or boundaries, offering her audiences innovative musical experiences and playing with the instrumental, scenographic and sensory aspects of her concerts. Julie Catherine also has a special attachment to literature and a deep bond with the texts she performs.

Her current projects include the multidisciplinary project ‘Sichtweisen’ and the recording of her first EP, an intimate collection of melodies performed on vocals and piano.

Experiences

A laureate of the Fondation Royaumont and the Fritz-Wunderlich-Gesellschaft since 2022, Julie Catherine regularly takes part in chamber concerts with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, where she sings demanding pieces such as Boulez’s “Le Marteau sans maître” conducted by Joseph Bastian.

She also performs in contemporary premieres, notably as part of the Münchner Biennale and the MelosLogos Lieder Festival in Weimar, and collaborates with Vokalzirkel and the Schola Heidelberg (ensemble singing).

Julie Catherine has performed Gustav Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” on several occasions with the aisthesis ensemble, conducted by Walter Nussbaum. She also shared the stage with Julian Prégardien at the Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele. This project was supported by the organisation founded by Barbara Hannigan, “Momentum: our future, now”, of which Julie Catherine is a member.

Academic career

Julie Catherine continues to train in Paris with Susan Manoff, Véronique Gens and Alexia Cousin. She has perfected her art through an impressive academic career: a Master’s degree with Julian Prégardien and Christian Gerhaher, an Erasmus period at the Paris CNSM in Valérie Guillorit’s class, a Bachelor’s degree in Christiane Iven’s class in Munich, and a pre-college course with Stephan MacLeod in Lausanne.
